You MUST know who your target market is, otherwise you will be wasting huge amounts of money in an un-targeted splatter gun effect on marketing and advertising, and your results will be poor. There is no way you will sell many walking sticks to children, or 400w super powerful speakers for your car to the elderly. So why bother targeting them at all? Knowing your target market, who they are and where they are, is essential for a highly focused, targeted approach to the market you want to serve.

Message

Now you know who you are targeting, you can craft your message so that it really appeals to them, and really strikes a chord with them. Your message needs to be such that your target market or prospect will easily understand what you are saying, in the same tone as they would speak, not in the tone you would speak!

With everything to do with sales and marketing (and in your business as a whole) it is all about the customer, not you as a business.

A carefully crafted message will send your results through the roof when you really try and understand your target audience, and aim your message at solving a need that your target audience has. The “message” part of the 3M formula is where you present your solution to your prospects problem.

Remember: that is why you are in business in the first place; to solve your target prospects’ problem.

Do not speak to your prospects how you want to be spoken to … for the very best results talk to them how they want to be spoken to.

 

Media

There is no point in preparing the perfect sales script, then getting it out there in a medium that simply won’t be read or heard by your target audience. For example, there is no use selling your very expensive, hand crafted walking sticks in PC gamer, which is primarily aimed at the teenage computer games market, or advertising a new keep fit class just located in Birmingham in a national magazine.

Ensure your message gets in front of the right audience for amazing results!

  • What car do they drive?
  • What job do they do?
  • What is their income?
  • What sort of language do they use?
  • How do they talk?
  • Are they extroverts or introverts?
  • Are they local to the area or from outside of town?
  • What is it about your business that would really appeal to them?
  • What do they read?
  • What do they watch?
  • Where do they go on holiday?
  • Where do they shop?
  • What is the problem that your service will help them with?
  • … and anything else you can think of that may be even slightly relevant!

This all helps you put together a detailed picture of your target prospect, and when you do that you can start to look at how to craft your message so that it will appeal directly to them.

Always remember that your job is only to solve a customers’ need.
